Hormone Pellets Q&A
What are hormone pellets?
Bioidentical hormone pellets are made with plant-based materials and include no synthetic hormones. The plant materials contain elements identical to the hormones your body produces naturally.
Hormone pellets can alleviate symptoms that develop when your hormone levels are fluctuating. Dr. Jackson offers BioTE® hormone pellet therapy to treat imbalances relating to thyroid disorders and menopause.
What are the symptoms of a hormone imbalance?
When you have a hormone imbalance, your body either produces too much or too little of certain hormones. Even a small imbalance can trigger symptoms that are serious enough to interfere with your life.
These symptoms may include:
- Dry skin
- Weak bones
- Vision problems
- Irregular periods
- Difficulties sleeping
- Changes in sex drive
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
Imbalanced hormones also can cause increased anxiety, depression, and chronic fatigue. Long-term consequences of a hormone imbalance can affect your bones, causing them to become brittle and weak.
What’s involved in hormone therapy?
Dr. Jackson creates a custom hormone therapy treatment plan to address your specific condition and needs. She performs an in-office blood test to determine which hormones she needs to regulate during therapy.
Hormone pellets work from under the surface of the skin. Insertion takes only a few minutes. Dr. Jackson implants them in the upper part of your buttocks, using a small incision. She covers the incision site with a clean bandage.
After the pellet insertion procedure, Dr. Jackson can provide you with aftercare instructions, that include avoiding hot tubs and swimming until the incision heals. You can expect to return to your normal activities once this occurs.
How long until I can see the results of hormone therapy?
Pellets last for 3 to 6 months depending on a number of factors, including your gender and weight. Because the pellets are similar to the hormones your body makes, they absorb into your skin and dissolve completely. Dr. Jackson may recommend having additional pellets inserted several times in a year, based on your specific needs.
It takes time for your hormones to level out after pellets are inserted. You can begin to see some relief of symptoms within a month of treatment and Dr. Jackson monitors your hormone levels frequently to evaluate how treatment is working for you.
